Float Tubing 101

By Dave Finkelstein

Float tube fishing has been around for some time and although considered a poor man’s boat for in or close to shore fishing on lakes and streams the sport has progressed to being one of the more productive methods of fishing for many species of fish. Over the years , float tubes have evolved in design , safety, and comfort features . As with most sports comes advancements and the newer float tube designs have a more V-shape with multiple air bladders for safety if one or more air bladders fails . Anglers also now seat atop the water on seats that multiple layers of closed cell foam are also used for additional safety in case a mishap occurs in one of the air bladders. The newer V designs offer better propulsion through the water and ease in maneuvering while making turns. Along with the design improvements in float tubes there are accessories that can be added to assisting anglers with gear such as PVC rod holders and brackets for mounting portable fish finders and more. Anglers have a comfort factor similar to fishing in a Lazy Boy reclining chair for more or less a comparison in fishing experience. Although most float tubers wouldn’t go as far as stating it’s as previously mentioned they will admit there is a great deal of comfort when float tubing . The biggest hindrance to float tubers is getting from one place to another by using swimming fins and constantly kicking to keep a steady position or location. When the wind is blowing this may become a major chore to staying put in one area. Small folding anchors have a lot of value to float tubers and can make fishing on windy days less of a burden. Safety is your primary factor when float tubing and using a good PFD (personal floatation device) such as a life jacket or inflatable life jacket should always be used when tubing.  Please read Article from Dave Strege former Outdoor Journalist from "The Register" below.
